Electric underfloor heating vs water-based underfloor heating

What types of underfloor heating are there?

Two types of underfloor heating can be distinguished, electric underfloor heating and water-based underfloor heating.

Electric floor heating

Electric floor heating consists of mats or cables laid under the floor covering and connected to the electrical grid. The heating system heats the floor, which in turn heats the air in the room.

This type of underfloor heating is suitable for small spaces, such as bathrooms, and can be a cheaper alternative to water-based underfloor heating.

Water-based floor heating

Waterborne floor heating, works by means of pipes placed under the floor and connected to a central boiler. The heating system circulates hot water through the pipes, heating the floor and room.

Hot water underfloor heating is more durable and is often used as a basic whole-house heating system. However, it can be more expensive to purchase and install than electric underfloor heating.

But if electric floor heating is cheaper to purchase than waterborne, why choose waterborne floor heating anyway?

  • Cheaper to use: In general, the running costs of water-based underfloor heating are cheaper than electric underfloor heating.

  • Energy efficiency: Water has a higher heat capacity than electricity, which means that water uses less energy to heat a room than electricity. Therefore, water-based floor heating is generally more energy efficient than electric floor heating.

  • Suitable for larger spaces: Waterborne underfloor heating is more suitable for larger spaces because it is easier and more efficient to spread heat over larger areas. From an area of about 25 m², waterborne underfloor heating is cheaper.

  • Sustainability: Water-based underfloor heating is more durable and lasts longer than electric underfloor heating. It is also better for the environment because of its lower energy requirements. At R Floorzz, we also make our underfloor heating panels from sustainable materials!

  • Flexibility: A waterborne system can be connected to different types of heat sources, such as a conventional central heating boiler, a solar water heater or a heat pump. This gives more flexibility when choosing a sustainable heating solution.

  • Floor cooling: You can also cool with water-based floor heating if you use a heat pump!

What factors influence the price of underfloor heating?

The price of underfloor heating is influenced by what type of underfloor heating is chosen and how it is installed. The following factors also play a role:

  • Main or auxiliary heating
  • The number of square meters (m²)
  • What top layer finish is used
  • Is noise reduction needed?

Cost of underfloor heating as main heating

When the underfloor heating is laid as main heating, it is wise to choose pipe diameter 16 mm. In addition, we recommend that the center-to-center distance of the underfloor heating pipe in the floor should be no wider than 120 mm. It is advisable to be able to control each room separately. This means that you need several groups and make sure that these groups do not overlap in other rooms.

Cost of underfloor heating as additional heating

Would you like to have warm feet, but also continue to use radiators? This is possible with the floor elements of R Floorzz. Here the center-to-center distance is less important, but it must be pleasant. Therefore, we advise you to carefully assess your wishes for heating the rooms and also take into account possible future plans.

The number of square meters (m²)

Of course, the final price of underfloor heating depends on the number of square meters to be laid. In general, the rule of thumb is: the larger the area to be laid, the lower the price per square meter.

What top layer finish is used?

Increasingly, leveling is possible on the floor elements. This makes it possible to install just about any kind of decorative flooring on the R Floorzz floor elements. It is important to know in advance what your wishes are, so that we can provide you with the right advice for the finish.

Are you having it done by an upholsterer? Then have them take care of smoothing and leveling the R Floorzz floor elements.

Is noise reduction needed?

In some cases, noise reduction is necessary, or sometimes desirable. It may also be that this is required by, for example, an owner's association. In these cases, this can easily be solved by adding sound-damping insulation, for example.
