Laying your own underfloor heating: here's how to do it

With R Floorzz you can easily install your underfloor heating yourself. During the consultation with R Floorzz we discuss the surface on which you want to install your underfloor heating. Depending on the subfloor we determine whether you will install R Floorzz Mono or Duo. Beforehand, in consultation with you, we make a clear laying plan in which you can see exactly where you install which prefabricated underfloor heating plate and how and where you lay which group of underfloor heating pipes.

The big advantage is that you know your home best. You lay it at your time, at your pace and know exactly where which underfloor heating group will be laid. Plus, it's incredibly fun to install your own underfloor heating.

R Floorzz's dry construction and renovation system consists of floor plates into which we have milled the slots for the underfloor heating pipe in our factory. As a result, there is hardly any milling work on site and it is often only necessary to saw the floor elements. Assembling the floor elements is easy with basic (electric) tools.

We make the laying plan for the plates and pipe for you. This makes assembly and connection easy.

How do you lay underfloor heating?

Underfloor heating is possible in every home. This is because for wooden subfloors with R Floorzz it is possible to install underfloor heating. When you have a sand/cement screed or concrete in your home, it is usually possible to mill the underfloor heating into your floor. This can be installed by us on the spot.

The dry construction system consists of floor elements into which the slot for underfloor heating has been milled. These floor plates you lay on your level floor. In it you make the underfloor heating pipe. When it is connected you mount a cover plate on these floor plates, on which you can mount your decorative floor. The floor plate is attached with glue and screws to the floor plate in which you mounted the underfloor heating.

It is often possible to work on the R Floorzz Mono and Duo systems with Pouring compound. This is a wet mortar that seals the slots. With the right preparations and use of edge strips, it is possible to pour this Pouring compound on the floor elements without causing damage. The big advantage is that R Floorzz Pouring compound ensures that the conductivity of the floor heating is even higher. This creates a maximally durable system.

How far apart should underfloor heating be?

You can lay underfloor heating at different center-to-center distances. Usually milled with a center-to-center distance between 100 and 150 mm. These center-to-center distances are sufficient when you use pipe thickness 14-16 mm. for mounting main heating. Of course, it is possible to use other center-to-center distances. It is also important to ensure good insulation of your home. We are happy to advise you on this.

Where should you not lay underfloor heating?

You may put underfloor heating anywhere, but the advice is not to put underfloor heating in some places :

  • Under refrigerator
The refrigerator cools and there is no need to heat the refrigerator
  • Under the kitchen unit or fixed cabinets
Under cabinets that are fixed in the house or the kitchen, for example, underfloor heating is often not installed.
  • In the bathroom under the tub and shower stall.
This prevents a lot of limescale in the shower area
  • In open spaces
In the entrance or hallway with an open staircase, you can choose to place only transport hoses (supply and return tube to the distributor). Here the heat is volatile.

How much floor construction is needed for underfloor heating?

Underfloor heating can be laid in a sand/cement screed if the construction height is at least 2.5 centimeters and preferably 5 centimeters. If you have a wooden subfloor, the floor must be structural so that a dry construction system can be laid over it.

What is the best pattern for underfloor heating?

dry_bud plates_laid_explanation

There is no such thing as the best floor heating pattern. There are pros and cons of both laying patterns, meander and cochlea. This is especially in heating the floor heating when you choose meander.

For a durable system, it is important to keep your underfloor heating at a constant temperature.

How do you test underfloor heating?

You test the underfloor heating system by pressurizing it after installation. You do this by filling the system with water and pressurizing it to at least 2 bar. Make sure you always keep the system pressurized and vent regularly.

What to do in case of leaks?

If the underfloor heating is losing pressure and you can't see the leak, we recommend contacting an underfloor heating company right away. They can look for you where the leak is by using a thermal imaging camera or other options.

Can you see the leakage due to water on the floor? When you know the group, turn off this group and contact an underfloor heating company.

How do you vent underfloor heating?

Bleeding underfloor heating is important to do regularly. You check this by looking at the flow meters on the floor heating manifold.

Filling and venting the underfloor heating system:

  • Close both ball valves, and close all group valves.
  • Connect a fill hose to the lower (supply) bar and start filling by gradually opening the fill and drain water and fill valve, it does not have to be fully open.
  • Once there is sufficient pressure in the floor heating system, you can vent group by group by opening the group valve and simultaneously venting through a vent point .
  • After venting a group, close the appropriate group valve (C) and repeat this procedure on any subsequent groups.
  • Sufficient pressure should remain in the system during venting.

How do you set up underfloor heating properly?

You set up underfloor heating properly by following the manual of the underfloor heating manifold and then immediately following the heating protocol.

How can you turn off underfloor heating?

Turning off floor heating is not necessary and is not advised. If you are using an underfloor heating manifold with a pump, never turn it off.

Can you install underfloor heating in an existing floor?

Yes, you can install underfloor heating in and on an existing floor.

What does it cost to install underfloor heating yourself?
